Everybody Needs Tension

Tension is an important aspect of writing, and tension amongst characters is vital. The tension gives the characters the ability to fight with each other, which in turn raises the tension and suspense in the story.

While, as writers, we may want our characters to be happy and have great lives, for the story to be gripping, we need lots of tension. There’s nothing better than having a character fighting for his life, chasing bad guys, and getting shot at, and on top of all that, be having an argument with his girlfriend back at home. Perfect characters that everyone likes are boring to read about, because they have no one to fight with.

The tension between characters can even be little things. In my WIP, the IT nerd is a messy character, and he’s irritating the housekeeper, who is spending her days cleaning after him. (As the IT guy is finding out, it’s not a good idea to anger the woman who can vacuum while she watches the sun rise!) This tension is enough to enjoy writing their scenes, and hopefully is enjoyable to read!

What are your thoughts on this? What tensions do your characters have? Let me know in the comments!

Letting it Sit

Okay, small post today because I’m super tired, and I’ve got assignments to catch up on.

Last week, you may have seen my tweet that I finished my short story. It’s a short story that I’ve been writing throughout the year, and finished off over the past few weeks. Now that I’m done, I’m eager to start work on it.

My question is: how long should I let my short story sit for? I’ve never written such a large short story; usually only 3-4K. I let my last WIP sit for about two months, but a short story shouldn’t need as long right?

Let me know in the comments section!

Tag, I'm It

I’ve been tagged by the lovely Amanda to do this… tag thingy. (I have no idea what it’s called. I’ll just call it the ‘tag thingy’).

Anyway, I have to list 10 fun facts about me, and then pass this on to five other people... but, I’m no good at passing things onto other people, so if you want to do this, just pretend that I did.

So, ten facts about me:

1.    Like Amanda, when people tell me to name facts/interesting things/anything about me, my mind goes blank. This might take a while to name these facts…

2.    …okay, 23 hours later (no, really, 23 hours later)... I love to travel. I’ve seen pretty much everything there is to see in Australia (although if you ask me about it, you’ll probably ask about the one thing I haven’t seen), and I’ve seen quite a bit of South East Asia.

3.    I’ve met Queen Elizabeth II when she visited Australia in 2005. I was in the crowd when she arrived at the airport, and I gave her some flowers.

4.    The earliest story I remember writing was about magic fish, Power Rangers, and transforming people. I drew the pictures, then dictated the story to my mum, who wrote it down for me.

5.    I have two pet goldfish on my desk. I like them because I can talk to them, and they don’t argue with me.

6.    I love chocolate. Any kind of chocolate.

7.    At the point when my TBR pile was at its highest, it was taking six months a book to get to the top of the pile.

8.    I prefer Pepsi over Coke, vanilla ice-cream over chocolate, and Summer over Winter. That should count as three facts, right? No? *sigh*

9.    As reflected in my WIP, I’m a history buff. My favourite time period is the medieval ages.

10. I’m left handed. Like, really really left handed. My right hand is just for decoration.

Phew. There we go. Now it’s your turn! If you like, you can do this tag thingy on your blog, but if you’re lazy, you can name a fun fact about you in the comments. Go on, it’ll be fun. If you’ve already done this tag thingy… name an eleventh fact.

Thoughts, Ideas, Things that have Happened

Excuse me for the rambling post today. I thought I had an idea planned before I went away, but it turns out I didn’t, so I'm just writing. I’ve tried to structure this post as best I could, but it doesn’t seem to be going too well. Here’s… well I don’t know what they are. Thoughts? Ideas? Things that have happened? I don’t know, just read the post:

I’m back from my holiday, and I had a great time! I did get sick, but it was on the last day, which was very lucky. I’m slowly getting over it, but on Wednesday (when I was flying home) I felt like death!

I took a notebook and pen with me in the hope of writing something, but I couldn’t find time to write anything. I’ve gotten straight back into writing though, with 400 words yesterday, and plenty more expected today.

I also bought two new books at a closing down Angus & Robertson book store while on holiday. It’s a shame that the store was closing down, but it meant I could get new books to read for $5 each.

Despite the new purchases, my TBR pile is smaller than it has been in a while – only six books high (plus the book I started today). It seems I’m finally beginning to succeed in my quest to get rid of my TBR pile! Library, here I come!

Also, it’s really hot Down Under. I don’t mind the heat, but I don’t remember it being this hot! Considering that it’s only the beginning of Spring, I think it’s going to be a really hot Summer.

That’s pretty much all I have to say today. I’m slowly catching up on everything that happened while I was away, and that means a lot of blog reading! I’m just about finished, just a few more blogs to catch up on.

For the comments, how has your week been? What exciting things have you done?

Taking a Break

I’m going away over the September school holidays. I leave tomorrow morning and I’m really looking forward to taking a well-earned break from writing.

I won’t have my laptop with me for the week, so I’m forced to going to be taking a break from writing. I think I’ve earned this break though, I’ve been writing solidly for months now. Hopefully I’ll be able to do some writing longhand, but who knows?

I think it’s important for us to take breaks every now and then, especially if writing starts to become a chore. I’m not saying writing is a chore, but some days I just don’t feel like writing.

I’ll be gone until next Friday, 23 September, so check back here on Friday to read more exciting posts from me!

Have a great week!
